Mountain rail passengers stranded due to blocked track

Nearly 200 passengers of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail, a heritage train, were stranded when a large boulder fell on the tracks near Kallar station today, railway officials said. The train, running between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam, faced problems during the rainy season due to frequent landslips between stations. The track was blocked when the boulder fell at a spot about 55 km from Coimbatore.

The service had to be suspended for two days last week following landslips at 12 places on the route and was resumed on Saturday. A majority of the passengers were tourists, officials said. Senior officials rushed to the spot and arranged the onward journey of the passengers to Udhagamandalam by buses, they said.
