Anti-hijacking measures at airports under review
The Indian government Monday said anti-hijacking measures in major airports of the country were being reviewed following threats to blow them up.
"We have undertaken a review of the anti-hijacking measures. As far as any threat to the Indian airports is concerned, the government is responding as the situation demands," said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel. The government also ordered a high-level inquiry into the security breach by a Kuwait Airways airplane in the national capital's no-fly zone. "We have ordered an inquiry as to how a particular plane entered the no-fly zone," Patel told reporters after signing a deal with America's Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) for modernising the country's civil aviation industry.
The airplane strayed into the no-fly zone but was brought back to course immediately, a breach that occurred a day after airports across India were put on high alert following a warning by US authorities that a flight to Europe or the US could be hijacked. Last week, airports in southern India were put on alert after officials received a letter warning of imminent attacks.
