Howrah Station gets first platform for 22 coaches


Howrah station's first platform that can accommodate a 22-coach train was inaugurated by Eastern Railway General Manager S S Khurana. The 540 metre-long platform has a washable apron made of ballast concrete track that would improve cleanliness, safety, besides giving an aesthetic look. Renovated at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, platform 17 will accommodate trains of the South Eastern Railway and also those of the Eastern Railway during emergencies, ER sources said. Howrah station now has 21 platforms of which platforms one to 15 are in the old complex and used by trains of the Eastern Railway. Platform number 16 is used for parcel traffic. Platforms 18 to 21 are in the New Complex and are for trains of the South Eastern Railway. According to sources, two more platforms, number 22 and 23 are in various stages of construction. While platform 22 is nearing completion at a cost of Rs 4.15 crore, work was on for platform 23 at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
