Tourist arrivals cross 4 million mark

Tourist arrivals in the country have crossed the four million mark in the year 2006. According to figures released by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the total number of tourists who arrived in India in the year 2006 is 44,29,915, a 13 per cent increase compared to 2005 when the figure stood at 39,18,610. However, in 2005 the arrivals were 13.3 per cent more than the preceding year. The highest increase was in the month of April this year which registered 24.7 per cent more arrivals against the same month last year. The government also earned 17.6 per cent more foriegn exchange with figures touching Rs 29,603.56 crore in 2006 against Rs 25,172.25 crore in the previous year.
