Steam engine pulls heritage train through Delhi
Retired from service in 1987, there is a new lease of life for this steam engine as it pulled a new heritage train through the national capital. The engine, manufactured at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, US, in 1947, pulled a four-coach Steam Heritage Train on a sight-seeing tour through Delhi. The train, in which two of the coaches are from the Railway owned by the Nizam of Hyderabad, gave its passengers, including a large number of children, a chance to see the various heritage sites of the capital such as Purana Quila, the Red Fort and the Humayun's Tomb. The special train departed from Safdarjung Railway Station and completed a two-hour circuit through the city. The heritage run was part of the various activities lined up for the 'Rail Heritage Month' being celebrated by Northern Railway to sensitise the general public, particularly children, towards railway's heritage. Similar steam train runs will also take place on January 13, 20 and 27.
