Fog insurance for passengers soon

Air travellers could soon be able to insure themselves against flight delays and cancellations. The recent spell of fog had passengers running for cover and led to huge losses for airlines. Now, some carriers are looking at the option of offering insurance cover to passengers for a price that would give them the option of opting for the next available flight to destination or hotel accommodation. Air India is learnt to have already started the service. This would cover any delay or cancellation caused by reasons like fog, technical snags or unavailability of aircraft."We are planning to launch our scheme by March-end. Under this, a passenger could get insured for Rs 100 to Rs 150. This would provide a cover of up to Rs 10,000 that could be used by the passenger to catch the next available flight to his or her destination, or be used to get hotel accommodation," said Sanjay Kumar, Spicejet's VP (marketing).
