Flying abroad may get cheaper
Flying abroad could become marginally cheaper with international carriers reducing their fuel surcharge after a fall in price of oil. British Airways on Friday dropped fuel surcharge from 35 to 30 pounds per sector, which would bring down return economy fares in the Delhi-London route by around Rs 850. Accordingly, air fares from India to New York via London would be down by around Rs 1,700 per person. This applies to long-haul flights that are under nine-hour duration. A spokesperson of British Airways said the reduced rates would only apply to flights to and from Mumbai and Delhi and would come into effect from Friday January 12. The ravel trade expects other airlines flying in the India-UK route to follow suit. In January, the return economy fares in the Delhi-London route varies between Rs 24,000-32,000 per person, excluding taxes. Return economy fares in Delhi-London-New York sector starts off from Rs 36,000, excluding taxes. Japan Airlines too had brought down its fuel surcharge from 1 January this year. Some European carriers said they are monitoring the fuel situation closely, but did not react to BA’s move. Despite recent drop in oil rates, fuel costs remain the second largest cost after employee costs for airlines globally.
