Steps taken to ease traffic congestion at airports


The Government has taken a number of steps like constructing high speed exit taxiways to deal with heavy traffic congestion at Delhi and Mumbai airports. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said new high speed exit taxiways at Delhi and Mumbai airports have been constructed and some more are under construction. "A parallel taxi-track has been constructed at Delhi airport by which runway occupancy time has been reduced considerably," he said adding flights were getting delayed mainly at Delhi and Mumbai airports. He said an improved air traffic control (ATC) has been framed and a clearance delivery position has been established at Mumbai and Delhi airports. Restrictions have also been imposed on general aviation aircraft movement during peak period at Delhi and Mumbai airports, the Minister said adding ATC automation system at Delhi and Mumbai are being upgraded. Patel said at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Delhi International Airport Private Limited is going to start construction of a new parallel runway by January 2007 which will be ready by 2008.
