Airlines blame passengers for deaths at airport
With six passengers dying at the city airport over the last few weeks, major airlines apportioned blame on the travellers for not revealing details of their health condition. The latest incident happened yesterday when a jaundice patient collapsed at the airport after he alighted from a Kingfisher aircraft following complaints of uneasiness. 53-year-old Manikchand Jain, who was on his way to Chennai after undergoing treatment at a city hospital, died due to cardiac arrest at the airport lounge. Airline officials said the noncompliance of submission of medical reports was making it difficult for the carriers to provide timely medical help and take necessary precautionary measures on board or at the airport.
"Heart patients and those having some kind of chronic problems should report to the airline about their health condition at the time of booking itself. Many passengers are not following," a senior airline official said. As many as six deaths occurred at the city airport over the last few weeks raising concerns among the travelling public and health administrators with airlines coming under the scanner of the government. Five passengers were international travellers coming from Europe or the US, spending at least more than seven hours continuously on board. Mumbai International Airport Ltd spokesperson Manish Kalghatgi said airlines were not informing MIAL about the health conditions of their passengers.
