US citizen dies of heart attack at Mumbai airport

Death revisited the Mumbai airport for the fourth time this month on Sunday morning when an American passenger suffered a cardiac arrest minutes after arriving on a 15-hour, non-stop New York-Mumbai Delta Air Lines flight.

The death of 64-year-old George Neumann highlighted the risks associated with long, non-stop air travel. Delta began its NY-Mumbai flights on November 1 and it is currently the longest non-stop journey to and from Mumbai. Air India plans to introduce the same non-stop flight in March, while Kingfisher has similar plans for the future. It was the fourth incident of a passenger dying either en route to or after arriving at Sahar airport in the past fortnight. All the passengers were over 50 years of age.Neumann turned blue within an hour of landing and was declared dead on arrival at Holy Spirit Hospital, Andheri (E).

The post-mortem report did not state the cause of death and visceral analysis is awaited, but doctors who attended to Neumann said it appeared to be cardiac arrest. Neumann was travelling alone and was on his way to Pune, where he worked for Emersons, a private company. The ultra-long-haul flight (DL16 JFK-Mumbai) landed two hours late at 12.05am and passengers had begun disembarking from the Boeing 777 when the incident happened. Sources said that Neumann was clearing emigration when he suffered a cardiac arrest. "There was a cardiac surgeon and some paramedics who were also passengers on board. They rushed to resuscitate him," said a Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd spokesperson.
