Indian Railways to serve 'litti chokha' to passengers
After 'mattha' (buttermilk) and tea in 'kulhad' (earthen cups), Railways is introducing 'litti chokha', a delicacy made of vegetables and flour, at stations in northern and eastern states. "Recognising the popularity of 'litti chokha' among passengers in these areas, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has directed us to open stalls at stations," K K Srivastava, Chief Commercial Manager, said.
Earlier, on Prasad's direction, the Railway Ministry had introduced 'Kulhad' tea and 'mattha' as well as use of handloom fabrics in trains. "Indian Railways has generally been catering standard food items at stations and as well as on trains," he said, adding certain local food items like 'idli'and 'dosa' were also introduced. For the first time, a 'litti chokha' stall was opened at Patna Station recently, Srivastava wrote in an article published in the Indian Railways journal's latest issue. Considering the popular demand, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation has been advised to open these outlets at other stations also, Srivastava said. Such stalls are being opened at Mughal Sarai, Gaya, Dhanbad, Hajipur, Samastipur and Muzaffarpur, he said.
