Indian Railways starts anti-squatting drive
The Indian Railways has embarked on a drive to clear squatters from its land, starting with the national capital, as part of its plan for commercial exploitation of these assets and setting up budget hotels. "We have issued the gazetted notification for establishing the Railway Land Development Authority and are in the process of finalising our plans for commercial exploitation of land," said Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Wednesday while addressing the annual economic editors conference.
The railway minister said the plan was to set up around 100 budget and low-cost hotels in different parts of the country, including Delhi, as part of public-private partnership. He said the railway had surplus funds, which it would utilise for clearing or resettling land occupied illegally but would not give away an inch of land. Lalu Prasad added that land allocation would be the responsibility of the state government.
