Special Indian flight on Friday to clear rush

National carrier Indian will operate a Calcutta-Ranchi-Delhi special flight on Friday to meet the rush of passengers. A 145-seater Airbus A320 will be the second such special flight between Calcutta, Ranchi and Delhi in less than a month. The last special flight was operated during Chhath, on October 28.

Sources said the flight is aimed at assessing the scope for starting a direct Ranchi-Delhi flight, which the airline authorities are contemplating after adding six new aircraft in its fleet. Ranchi area marketing manager of Indian Satish Kumar Bage said over 45 passengers were waitlisted on Friday and the flight would help tackle the rush for Delhi. Talks are on to start a dedicated flight between Ranchi and Delhi, he said. “Now Ranchi and Patna have a single flight to Delhi, which is unable to meet the demand. Everyday, about 20-25 passengers from Ranchi figure in the waiting list. Earlier, Patna had a separate morning flight to Delhi for four days in a week, but it has been withdrawn. There is scope for more flights to Delhi from Ranchi, and ideally, there should be separate flights to Delhi from Ranchi and Patna,” Bage said.

Indian is adding 43 new aircraft to its fleet, of which six A319 with a seating capacity of 145 are to be used in the eastern sector. One of the six is likely to directly air-link Ranchi with Delhi. The airline is also contemplating an onward connection to passengers from Ranchi to different locations, sources said. The airline plans to extend fare advantages and schemes to passengers from Ranchi, they added. There will be a total of four flights to Delhi on November 10 — two of Indian and one each of Air Sahara and Air Deccan, sources further said.
