The Railways planned to operate 200 more superfast trains and add more coaches in 190 trains to increase the revenue from the passenger traffic by another Rs.200 crore a year, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said.

Flagging off of the Madurai-Manmad (Weekly) express,he said with this service, all new train commitments for Tamil Nadu, made in the last Railway Budget, had been kept. The Train would leave Madurai every Thursdays at 23:45hrs and reach Manmad at 13:10hrs on Saturdays. In the return direction, the train would leave Manmad at 21:40hrs on Saturdays and arrive Madurai at 09:00hrs on Mondays. He said the Train would link Tirupati, another pilgirm centre like Madurai, and would be a boon to the devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba as Manmad is just 58 km from Shirdi. It also links Aurangabad from where people could go to Ellora and Ajantha Caves and another historic place of Daulatabad fort. Nanded,a holy place for Sikhs, is on the route to Manmad.

This year 55 new trains had been introduced, services of 37 trains had been extended, and frequency of 12 trains had been increased,he said. P.Mohan,CPI-M MP, said as the train connected Pilgrim towns, historical places, and tourist centres it should operated twice a week.He also urged the Minister to operate DEMU train between Madurai and Virudhunagar. R.Shanmugasundaram, MP, wanted more coaches to be added to the Madurai-Tenkasi Passenger Train as it was filled to capacity all the time to which Velu said two coaches would be added from December.
