711 ATMs planned at railway stations

In a move aimed at providing more facilities to passengers, Indian Railways Wednesday signed a pact with six national banks for setting up 711 automated teller machines (ATMs) at various railway stations across the country. These ATMs are in addition to the 682 ATMs being set up with the help of State Bank of India. Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with representatives of Canara Bank, Dena Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Indian Bank and Punjab National Bank, 473 out of 711 ATMs will also have e-ticketing facilities. By March-end, 250 of the 711 ATMs are to be installed in stations in both rural and urban areas. The design for the ATM sites and Internet kiosks have already been approved, according to the railway ministry. Planned as part of value added passenger amenities, the provision for e-ticketing is expected to reduce long queues at the ticket counters.
